Consider shaking up the way you set goals and how you measure them. SMART Goals are the most known methodology and generally apply in most instances. SMART stands for Smart, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound goals.
The big question is whether your goals are aligned with your purpose and values? Consider other goal setting frameworks that are just as accountable but also consider values such as PACT goals: Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, and Trackable.
1. PURPOSE-DRIVEN
A purpose-driven approach serves as the bedrock of your aspirations, embodying the core meaning and fervour propelling you toward your objectives. It’s not about fleeting satisfaction but rather echoes the values underpinning your ambitions and deeds.
If you are part of a growth-minded business and you want to embed these values deep through the team, then these values need to be aligned with individual goals and actions.
2. ACTION-FOCUSED
Being action-focused means seizing the present moment rather than getting tangled in over-planning for an uncertain future. It’s akin to the notion of living in the now, making tangible strides within your current sphere of control instead of fixating solely on distant outcomes.
While preparing for the future holds importance, excessive planning can lead to inaction. Over-analysis can breed “analysis paralysis,” deterring us from the most effective way of learning—trial, error, and iterative attempts. PACT goals encourage experimentation, fostering resilience, and nurturing a landscape for continual growth.
3. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
The pursuit of continuous improvement involves establishing repeatable routines to sidestep the paralysis of choices that hinder immediate action. Over-planning can lead to “choice paralysis”, where endless options stifle progress.
Spending too much time deliberating rather than acting can be stifling. Embracing PACT goals encourages initiating and iterating through continuous actions, gauging success not just by outcomes but also by the process itself.
4. TRACKABLE PROGRESS
Lastly, tracking progress through “Trackable” actions, a divergence from the typical “Measurable” in SMART goals, significantly impacts mental wellness. It emphasises acknowledging effort and progress as markers of accomplishment.
For instance, rather than immediately aiming for a 45-minute bike ride, acknowledging the merit of consistent efforts toward that goal. The PACT model emphasises tracking routines, aligning with principles from Tiny Habits by B.J. Fogg, enabling the establishment of new habits incrementally.
PACT GOALS IN ACTION
Consider these two PACT goal examples:
“Dedicate two hours of business development every day to drive business growth.”
“Commit to a daily team briefing throughout the year to align the team’s daily focus and deepen the team bond.”
PACT goals emphasise initiating action in the present moment. It’s about identifying the steps to enhance yourself and the team, and commencing the journey. It’s not about achieving perfection but dedicating consistent effort toward achieving one’s best potential. Whether it’s acing every class or running daily, it’s the commitment to the process that counts.
There is no single perfect method for reaching your goals, but one thing is for sure – you need to commit to them, share them and track them!
